TOOLS FOR SME’s

The well-being of the environment, communities and individual workers is undeniably linked to the actions of private enterprises. MSMEs have the potential to significantly affect the SDGs, if they manage to formalize and scale up their practices. HxN, towards its business practices with animaná, has been working with textile suppliers to improve their processes and meet the demands of the fashion market in a sustainable and circular manner. Nowadays, only 5.4% of the final retail value of clothing goes to producers at the base of the value chain. This number can change.

MSMEs are more agile to change their way into a better one. Using the toolkit, companies can:

  • Conduct an assessment of impacts, risks and opportunities – with sector and geography being key factors – to determine the most significant and strategic goals.

  • Join efforts to address the world’s sustainable development challenge.

  • Connect business strategies with global priorities.

  • Identify future business opportunities to grow companies.

  • Strengthen stakeholder relationships by building trust.

  • Keep pace with policy developments and work to stabilize markets.

  • Mitigate exposure to risk by stabilizing societies and markets.

  • Use a common language to form partnerships.

By sharing capacity building tools and resources with every business owner, no matter where they are, we can overcome the fragmented nature of value chains and form alliances to co-create a fair, ethical and sustainable fashion industry. The Toolkit generates abilities in business: add business players that supports circular practices, help to develop skills in the designing of circular companies (from the designer to the producer and the consumers). Also, the toolkit creates a network of peers and potential partnerships with different experiences and skills with the possibility to incubate collaborative circular ideas generated into the network to help MSMEs to grow up. In this toolkit, MSMEs can find tools related to Business Management, Circularity, Sustainable Value Chains, and Standards and certifications, among others.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS - PROGRAM

Hecho x Nosotros works on eight of the total seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 1, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, and 17. (See Figure 1).

Figure 1. Sustainable Development Goals

The organization identified a set of goals and mapped directly the direct and indirect impact of its activities. On the one hand, this report has the purpose of refering to direct impact when the HxN activities help to develop the SDG index (for instance, for the SDG4 HxN educational workshops directly affect indexes 4.3 and 4.4). On the other hand, indirect impact refers to those fields that are in line with HxN mission but do not have the measuring capability (for instance, we know that our activities have a direct impact on issues concerning gender, which is projected in SDG5, but the indexes designed by the UN for this goal, such as the number of women in political charges or management positions are not in line with HxN activities.)

In this regard, we determine that HxN has a direct impact upon three SDGs: goals 4, 8, and 12. Goal 4 guarantees inclusive, equal, and quality education and promotes life-long learning opportunities for everyone. Goal 8 promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth as well as decent employment and working conditions for everyone. Goal 12 guarantees sustainable consumption and production modalities (see Table 2).

Table 2. Direct and Indirect Impact

Indirectly, in the same work field but without a possible measurement according to the methodology of indexes suggested by the UN, the organization contributes to the SDGs number 1, 5, 10, 13 and 17. Goal 1 tackles poverty in every form all around the world. Goal 5 achieves gender equality and empowers women and girls. Goal 10 reduces inequality in and in between countries. Goal 13 adopts urgent measures to tackle climate change and its effects. Finally, Goal 17 revitalizes the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.

This toolkit attempts to help those companies to find out if their practices are in line with the SDGs and evaluate the best practices that could be implemented in order to be in accordance with this set of objectives.
